On this “May the 4th” of our discontent, let us take a step back from the dogmatic, narrow view of the Jedi and attempt to understand the “great mystery.”

Two years ago I marked “May the 4th Be With You” in this space by registering my suspicion that we will eventually look back on 2017’s The Last Jedi as the cultural moment when “Star Wars went off the rails.” I at least thought of The Last Jedi as a positively interesting film. My concern lies in how it undermined Anakin Skywalker’s sacrifice and Luke Skywalker’s achievement, to my taste poorly…
